Broadway Bridge

The Broadway is a drawbridge completed in 1913. It is a double-leaf Rall type Bascule drawbridge, unique in Portland and very rare otherwise. (A bascule drawbridge is “seesaw” style, the two “draws” lift up away from each other to accomodate for riverine traffic) The Rall system uses complicated rolling lift mechanisms, meaning long delays when the bridge goes up (usually 10–20 minutes).

USAGE: Automotive traffic, pedestrians, bicycles

OWNER: Multnomah County

BICYCLE INFO: Bicycles have bike lanes up until the bridge itself, and then are directed onto the sidewalks. The Broadway is the most popular connection for bicyclists from N/NE to downtown and the westside.

TECHNICAL INFO: Total length 1,613 ft (492m), main span 278 feet long (85m), clearance from river 70 ft (21m). Painted “Golden Gate” Red (aka International Orange)
