Benson Bubblers

So most cities have public water fountains, but none other than Portland have Benson Bubblers. The bubblers were started by civic leader and wealthy guy Simon Benson in the ‘teens. Benson was concerned about all the drunk loggers seen around town, and figured that if there was a reliable, public source of drinking water to be found it would curb alcoholism. The first bubbler went into place at SW 5th and Washington in 1912, and by 1917 40 fountains can be found around town. Presently there are 52 bubblers, most are of the classic four-bowl design, some are only single bowls. Make sure you take a drink from one when you’re thirsty!

I use the one at MLK & NE Knott while waiting for the light on my bike. They are great for bikers.
