Tonalis Doughnuts & Cream

In Portland’s donut-verse, Voodoo reigns as king supreme and Annie’s comes in second (for those initiated to Annie’s ways). It’s a shame that Tonalis gets forgotten about, because their donuts are really great. (I recommend the Buttermilk bars). And if it’s summertime, they’ll provide you with the ice cream to get through the hot days. Sure, it’s not as hip as Voodoo, but the interior has an ambience of its own (reminding me of the east coast), and it’s near all the things the kids on Alberta love to do.

It's a great place. I hope it is able the wave of changes that Alberta St has been undergoing, and overall I hope it can stay in the area. The prices are reasonable (both for ice-cream and donuts), the staff is very friendly, and the atmosphere is unpretentious and quite enjoyable.

I have eaten donuts from Voodoo, Annie's and Tonali's and Tonali's is the best of the three. Annie's is also good, but Voodoo's mostly hype and novelty. The batter for cake donuts and buttermilk bars at Tonali's is dense and only mildly sweet. Most of the sugar seems to be in the donut's glaze. New Season's Market recently switched their store stock of donuts from Voodoo to Tonali's and I think it was a wise move. Go for the buttermilk bars, apple fritters or buttercrumb old-fashioned.

Its true, tonali's really is the best. I like the maple old fashioned the best. And the icecream selection could be the best ive ever seen. At least 40 flavors.

No doubt that Tonali's is the best. I don't know why Portland-ers insist on Voodoo. The hipster thing is old people, just go eat the best donuts in town @ TONALI'S! The apple fritter, when fresh out of the oven, is the tastiest treat i have ever come across for the price.
