Proper Eats
This cafe-plus-market is a properly welcome addition to St. Johns, with the feel of an old Berkeley institution. Their basic philosophy can be summed up in the mantra “organic, local, fresh.” Their menu reflects this, free of meat and featuring plenty of soups, salads, sandwiches and the like (their vegan tempeh rueben is TO DIE FOR and may accidentally convert meat eaters, so be warned!) A good selection of beer on tap plus live music makes this a great place to hang out in the evening hours. And to top it off, they offer a small grocery with a selection of natural/organic products, so St. Johnners (or is it St. Johnites?) don’t have to shlep all the way down to New Seasons or Alberta Co-op when they run out of TVP.
