Annie's Donuts

The quest for a good donut is a tough one in this town. If you’re from one of those places “back east” and are used to a Dunkin Donuts, Krispy Kreme, or (insert your local donut chain here) on practically every block, Portland must seem like a veritable donut desert. When a decent donut shop is found, it is like water to the thirsty man. Factors that would ordinarily be considered obstacles, like distance, are quickly forgotten. Annie’s is one of those decent donut shops, and despite being at least a couple miles from the closest “hip” district, devotees travel the distance to sample the savory treats, like pilgrims to Mecca. Annie’s is the ying to Voodoo’s yang in Portland’s Donutverse. Voodoo is only open at night, Annie’s open during the day. Voodoo is hip and quirky, Annie’s unpretentious and plain. Voodoo has punks and hipsters hanging out, Annie’s seems to be solely occupied by old men reading the newspaper (and if that doesn’t speak old-school donut shop, I don’t know what does!) I’m not saying one is better than the other, but if you solely sing the praises of Voodoo, I suggest heading out to Roseway to see what you’re missing. (Sorry, no vegan donuts.)
