Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge

This green area, wedged between the Willamette River and the Sellwood neighborhood, is an undeveloped park where you can see what the banks of the river looked like before the city was born. An unpaved trail runs the length of the park, starting at the SE Milwaukie entrance, heading south along the eastbank of a pond (good for bird-watching) and ends at the entrances of Oaks Park and Sellwood Park. Good place for dog-walkin. New-ish is the OMSI-Springwater trail, which is a paved bicycle and walking trail that parallels the old Portland Traction rail line. This path starts at SE 4th Ave. south of SE Division Place by the Ross Island Bridge (watch out for all the Ross Island cement trucks!) and runs all the way south to the Sellwood Bridge at SE Spokane St. There is a connecting trail to SE Milwaukie mid-way along the trail as well. If you need a quick connection from Sellwood to downtown via bike, this is it! Make sure you check out the gi-normous blue heron mural on the wall of the mausoleum (look across the pond from the trail.
