FREE GEEK

The lifespan of the average new computer is measured in months, not
years. The vast majority of these “old”, unwanted computers end up in landfills or are shipped overseas, where the parts poison the people and the land. FREE GEEK is a non-profit who aims to stop this while at the same time arming underprivileged folks with computers. They collect, assess, reuse and recycle computer hardware that individuals and organizations donate to them, rather than dumping as trash. The hardware is sorted and tested by volunteers who both help the cause and learn about computers at the same time. All parts that can be reused, are, and those which cannot are responsibly sold as scrap or recycled. In the end, the volunteers’ time is traded in for their own computer, which they conveniently learned all about during the process! Additionally, FREE GEEK has classes, all sorts of outreach programs, sells or donates hardware to non-profits, and has a thrift store open to the public. Plus so much more.
