Ira Keller (Forecourt) Fountain

During Portand’s urban renewal era (mid 1950’s to early 1970’s), this parcel of land across from Civic Auditorium had been acquired by the city for a park. Designed by Angela Danadjieva in 1968 and completed in 1970, the multi-tiered, modernist-designed fountain became an instant hit in town and abroad. (It also atracted “the hippies”, which didn’t please City Councillors like Frank Ivancie.) In 1978, Forecourt Fountain was renamed for Ira Keller, former director of the Portland Development Commission (1958–72) the personality most responsible (besides former Mayor Terry Schrunk 1957–73) for urban renewal in Portland. Keller knew how to get his way, and projects like South Auditorium and Memorial Coliseium reflect that. Reflect on that as you stare into the recirculating waters. Or take a dip on a hot day!
